There's something about dogs that draw us to them. Perhaps it's because they're social animals like us, and so we reciprocate when they easily develop feelings of loyalty and protectiveness towards their owners.
We don't have a dog nowadays, but when I was young in my home country we had a succession of dogs who were very much a part of the family. Unlike here in the USA, dogs were kept outside, but they played with us, ate the same food we did (well, ok, leftovers, but that still counts), and received lots of love and care from the family (in addition to occasionally gifting us with ticks...hmmm...yes, i believe that did happen)
Back in 1981, legendary actor James “Jimmy” Stewart, the star of “It's a Wonderful Life” went on “The Tonight Show with Johnny Carson” to share his hobby: poetry. The piece that he read was titled "I’ll Never Forget a Dog Named Beau" about Stewart’s golden retriever.
It was a long but heartfelt poem and brought tears to his and Carson's eyes, just as it did to mine. Listen to it.
